My vacuum cleaner died yesterday... we had hoped it might pull through but no, the smoke started up again when hubby tried it this morning... we had to fan away the ghastly smell...
It was a cheap(ish) Volta canister type... must say say it lasted 9-ish years so I guess it did ok...
... anyway we are needing to get a new vacuum cleaner. Any comments? Anything to avoid?
We need something that will:
- Carry three children who like to take rides on its back:)
- Suck up a mountain of gunk (but leave lego, small toys and children behind)
- Last forever (well... you know... a bit longer than the el cheapos...)
- Not make me crippled and hunch backed before the normal aging process...
- not send me too far across town to replace the paper bags, or have me disappointed as they are no longer available...
So if you have any recommendations/comments/insights... or freebies ... please add a comment!

Yes, I have one humble comment-make sure it has an extendable handle to alleviate sore and hunched backs...sis
We bought a Wertheim when our vacuum died 2 years ago. It's great for catching all the dust. But it eats socks, lego, dummies, hairclips ... you name it :) You get the bags easily at whatever that vacuum shop is called (in most malls). We paid a bit more than the cheapie models, but we've had no hassles. And believe me, it gets a workout around here.
love to you all xoxo
You could possibly check online for replacement bags and shop that way. One with a HEPA filter is useful in terms of allergies
Hi Sharon,
We have a Wertheim, too, with a power head. I love that it eats everything - especially that it gets hair up off the carpet, which lots of vacuum cleaners don't. It is awkward, but I have never known a vacuum that isn't - it is just the nature of the beast!
